“HELLO, INVESTIGATOR.”
Henry looked up from his paper in surprise, nearly tripping over a raised plank in the wooden walkway as he made his way from the post office. Jack grinned at him, sitting high on a horse as he rode down the main road.
“Henry,” Henry corrected.
Jack smiled softly. “Henry,” he said. “See you in a couple days, oui?”
Henry noticed Jack was outfitted for riding, with a pack strapped to the back of the saddle.
“You’re heading out?”
Jack scratched his beard and glanced at the sky. Dusk and the moon were hours away from making their appearance. “Yes, I’m going to the Sanctuary.” His smile did not reach his eyes. “Like the law-abiding lycanthrope that I am.”
“Have a good moon cycle,” Henry said sincerely. It was important to the lycanthropes. While he didn’t doubt Jack would prefer to make his own choices as to where he’d like to shift and wander about as a wolf, the Sanctuary was spacious, and he’d be around others of his kind. “I truly hope you have a wonderful few days.”
“Do you?”
“Of course!”
“And you? You’ll be busy with work, but will you be here when I get back?”
“Yes, I will,” Henry said. “Hopefully I’ll get to the bottom of the mystery, but I’ll have to send a report to my superiors and await their instructions. I may be here another month, to make sure there are no more occurrences during the next moon cycle.”
“I’m happy to hear that,” Jack said. He swung his leg over the back of the horse, easily hopping down. He held the reins loosely in his hand, but his horse merely swung its head around to watch Jack. Jack stepped closer to Henry, his voice dropping low. “I would like the chance to spend time with you.”
“Would you?” Henry asked. They weren’t touching, but Henry felt a tingle move through his body at the thought of it, and his heart started to beat faster. “Would you really?”
“Oui. Yes,” Jack said, leaning in close. “I’ve been remiss in my attentions to you these past days, and I regret letting it get so awkward between us. But you feel it too. The spark.” He looked his years suddenly, wise around the eyes and a beautiful maturity and confidence to his words. They brooked no argument.
Henry pursed his lips together. The truth was—yes. Yes, he did, and he didn’t want to deny it—but acknowledging it was an entirely different matter. It had been a long time, more than a decade, since he had felt like this. A long time ago, when he wasn’t yet twenty and his mate had still been alive. Though back in those days the spark did not feel the same, as he’d been an entirely different person. A young love, wild and reckless and new, with the world laid at their feet.
If only they’d known how short a time they’d have.
And now, with Jack—the spark was alive and hopeful, holding a promise of the kind of future he’d never let himself imagine before.
